Review of Kendal: A historic town nestled on the fringe of the Lakes National Park in the county of Cumbria, Kendal stands on the River Kent and it's a major spot for the tourism industry, luring huge numbers of visitors throughout the year. Already significant enough to be declared in the Domesday Book, completed in 1086, Kendal has a history which extends back to unrecorded eras, an early Roman fortification (AD90), & subsequent Norman castle give us evidence of this.

Historically part of Westmorland, the town of Kendal is predominantly constructed in the local grey limestone earning it the nickname of "Auld Grey Town", it is the third largest settlement in the county of Cumbria. Kendal currently has got a local population of around 28,586, though of course substantial amounts of tourists go to the area in particular through the summer season. Various titles have been given to Kendal through the centuries for example Cherchbi (in the Domesday Book), Kirkby in Kendal, Kirkbie Kendal and Kirkbie Strickland.

Whilst Kendal is recognized as a tourist hotspot, the town has also long been well known for its Kendal Mint Cake a sweet, later publicized as a high energy foodstuff, which has long been favoured by climbers & explorers. Different industries by which the inhabitants of the town have eked out a living across the years are the wool business, shoe making, tobacco snuff & pipe tobacco, it has also been a noteworthy market town.

The Historical Past of Kendal: The first settlers of the Kendal region were a tribe named the Brigantes, but the first building of any significance was put up by the invading Romans at nearby Watercrook by way of a fort in the first century AD, the Romans in due course departed in approximately the 4th C.

Once the Romans departed, the area was controlled by Celts (the Combrogi tribe) and then by the Anglo-Saxons, this was the case till the Norman conquest at which time a castle of stone was raised on Castle Hill in the 12th century, there still exist the remainder of which we now refer to as Kendal Castle. Kendal Castle is perhaps most widely known as the family home of the Parr family, furthermore some suppose that Catherine Parr (1512-48), Henry VIII's 6th wife was given birth to there, whilst it's extremely unlikely because the castle was actually beyond repair at the moment she was given birth to.

Richard I accorded a Market Charter to the town in 1189 in order to raise revenue for his Crusades, the charter for this essential Saturday market remains even today.

Kendal is situated in the South Lakeland District the county of Cumbria, in England, UK, to the south of Carlisle & Penrith, it is got to by railway via the FirstTranspennine Express & by car by means of the A684, A6 or A65 routes.
